==========================
• Now Synchronize will now support the new version 3.6.1 of Now Up-to-Date & Contact, as well as versions 3.0 to 3.6.

INSTALLING NEWTON SOFTWARE
============================
Important for Upgraders
======================
You will have to uninstall the Now Synchronize Package from your Newton and install the new version. Open Now Synchronize on your MessagePad, choose Prefs and DESELECT "Remove data...." if it is checked. Close Now Synchronize and remove Now Synchronize from your MessagePad. Please refer to your Newton User's Manual or to the Now Synchronize User's Guide for instructions on removing packages.
To install using the Newton Package Installer
=========================================
1. Connect a cable from the modem or printer port of your Macintosh to the communication port on your Newton device. If AppleTalk is usually active on your Macintosh, you’ll probably find that the modem port is usually the best one for connecting to your Newton device.
2. Launch the Newton Package Installer application. We have included a copy of NPI in the Now Synchronize 2.1 Folder.
3. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu. The Preferences dialog box may open automatically when the application launches.
4. Select the kind of connection used by your computer (Network or Serial), and click OK.
If you choose Serial, specify which port the Newton is connected to (Printer or Modem).
5. On your Macintosh, choose Install Package from the File Menu.
6. Select Now Synchronize.pkg from the Now Synchronize folder you installed earlier.
7. On your Newton device, open the Extras Drawer and tap Connection.
8. Choose the type of connection and tap Connect to open a connection to your Macintosh.
On both platforms, a dialog box appears to show the progress of the installation, then disappears when installation is complete.
Note: You can repeat the above steps to install the Now Synchronize Book.pkg which is the Now Synchronize manual in a Newton Book Format.
QuickStart Guide
===============
• Launch Now Synchronize on your Mac from the Now Synchronize 2.1 folder.
• Now Synchronize automatically checks for your primary calendar and contact files, if they are not selected or you wish to synchronize with other files click the select button below the Calendar file check box, find the calendar file you want to synch with and click Open. You can follow the same steps to select the Contact file.
• Once the files are selected click the Categories button. From the displayed list pick the categories you wish to synchronize.
Note: You can create a category called Newton in your Calendar and Contact files and select it in the Categories window. All new items from the Newton will be placed in that category. If you do not have a Newton category, all new items will be placed in the first selected category.
• Make sure that both the Calendar and Contact File check boxes are selected. You can deselect one of them if you do not wish to synch that file.
• Launch Nsync on the Newton by opening the Extras Drawer and tapping on the Nsync Icon.
• Make sure that the Connect Via selection on the Mac matches the Type of Connection selection on the Newton.
• Make sure that the cable is plugged in properly in the Newton and in the Mac.
• Click Connect and Synchronize on the Mac, tap Connect and Synchronize on the Newton.
NOTE
=====
• If you get a -48809 error on your Newton, try using Serial connection instead of AppleTalk.
• AppleTalk synchronization is only supported for Newton devices running Newton OS version 2.0.
• Special Note for users upgrading from Now Synchronize 1.0 or 1.0.1 to Now Synchronize 2.1 AND upgrading to a new Message Pad:
1. Open Now Synchronize on your old MessagePad, choose Prefs and deselect "Remove data...." Close Now Synchronize and remove Now Synchronize from your old MessagePad.
2. Backup your old MessagePad with the Newton Backup Utility.
3. Restore the information to your new MessagePad.
4. Install Now Synchronize on your new MessagePad.
5. Install Now Synchronize on your Macintosh. (You do not need to remove the Now Synchronize Preferences on the Macintosh.)
• If you delete Now Synchronize from your Newton and you have the "Remove data..." item checked in the Now Synchronize Preferences, you should also delete the Now Synchronize Preferences on your Macintosh. If you do not delete your Macintosh Preferences, Now Synchronize will not realize that it should be resending all its calendar and contact information to the Newton.
Remember that removing the preferences from either platform should only be done if you start running into problems, and even then you should do so as a last resort.
• A beamed contact or event will be deleted from the "receiver" of the contact or event if the "receiver" also uses Now Synchronize. There is no workaround for this bug—if users of both MessagePads use Now Synchronize, they should avoid beaming contacts and events to each other in this release.
• If you have more than one work, fax, home, or mobile telephone number, it will be deleted by Now Synchronize if the contact is modified on the Macintosh. To work around this problem, put additional work, fax, home, or mobile numbers in the "Phone" or "Other" field on the Newton and they will not be deleted (or synchronized.)
• Duplicating a contact on the MessagePad will always synchronize the duplicate entry and leave the original entry untouched and unsynchronized. The workarounds are to duplicate contacts on the Macintosh or duplicate contacts on the MessagePad manually without using the "Duplicate" command.
• If an error occurs in the middle of a synchronization, try forcing your calendar and contact files to recompress and then try the synchronization again with the compressed files. To compress your contact file, hold down the Option key while closing the Now Contact file; to compress your calendar file, choose "Save As…" from Now Up-to-Date's File menu.
• Now Synchronize 2.0 has been tested on Newton devices with U.S. worksites. Synchronizing to a Newton with a non-U.S. worksite may result in unreliable data.
• If you modify an event or contact on your Newton and then synchronize, then modify that event or contact in Now Up-to-Date or Now Contact and synchronize again, the information you added or changed on the Newton is lost. This is because changes made on the Macintosh take precedence.
• Be careful when changing information in a single occurrence of a repeating event on your Newton. Now Synchronize may interpret it as a separate event altogether, and it may not synchronize correctly with Now Up-to-Date.
• If you change the sort order of a synchronized contact from Last Name to Company on your Newton and then synchronize, the information in that contact's Company field in Now Contact can become corrupted.
• If you change a synchronized contact's home or work address on your Newton and then synchronize, the work address replaces any existing home address information in Now Contact if that contact's listing is by Last Name.
• Synchronizing with Now Up-to-Date public categories may send a Meeting notice to that Meeting's creator if a synchronized event blocks their time.
• Notes in repeating events created on the Newton will not be sent to the Macintosh during synchronization. Notes in single events created on the Newton are sent to the Macintosh on the first synchronize only. Overall, it's best to maintain notes for an event on the Macintosh rather than the Newton.
IF YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS OR WANT MORE FUNCTIONALITY
• If you have any other problems synchronizing, refer to the troubleshooting section of the User’s Guide or our web site at http://www.nowsoft.com. Our web site will always have the most up-to-date information on any problems our customers are having plus any solutions or work arounds. If you want to send us a note or suggestion, send e-mail to nsydev@nowsoft.com. Although we can not respond to all the e-mail we get at that address, we do read it for comments and suggestions.
• Apple plans to release a new version of the Newton Connection Utility in November or December of 1996. One of the many features of this utility is a program that synchronizes like Now Synchronize, but has a different set of features, is faster, and more flexible. We have worked closely with Apple on this latest version and recommend it for Newton users in general and especially for Now Up-to-Date & Contact customers who may want more then Now Synchronize 2.1 can offer.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE VERSION NUMBER
======================================
Version 2.1 does not include some of the new features that we had hoped to include, specifically e-mail and notes field synchronization. In order to ship a solution to customers sooner rather then later, we will not be adding these features and have changed the version number of this release from 2.5 to 2.1. We are not planning a version 2.5 since this would duplicate some of the features coming in the new Newton Connection Utility. We have been working with Apple to help them build the synchronization code in the Newton Connection Utility which Apple plans to ship in November or December of 1996.
